Approaches to psychotherapy at The Little White House
Psychotherapy research tells us that to a large degree it does not matter which type of therapy one engages in. The dodo bird verdict (a term that was inspired by the character from Alice in Wonderland), purports that all empirically validated psychotherapist are equal.
This is because the improvement that occurs in therapy is likely due to factors that are common to all therapy models, such as empathy, goal setting, the relationship between you and your therapist.
The various psychotherapies are based on different theoretical models that have emerged over the history of psychology. Therapists often choose models that fit their individual style and preference and/or may have simply had exposure to particular models in their training. Some therapies are specifically designed for certain problems (such as PTSD or anxiety).
Your own personal style and goals may help you choose which method suits you; practical people often want tools-based approaches (such as CBT) and others may be more interested in depth psychology where a deeper exploration of one’s psyche is embarked upon.
