Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were famous dancers in the US in musical films of the 1930s and 40s. When audiences remarked about Astaire’s incredible dance abilities, a commentator pointed out that Ginger Rogers did everything that Astaire did, but “in high heels and backwards”. One often gets the sense, being an ex-patriate, that life contains all the normal stressors plus the additional ones of isolation, alienation, healthcare access, and language difficulties.
