Finding a solution to sleepless nights is possible through expert knowledge and guidance, patience and support, and listening to your own instincts as a parent. Sometimes it is a matter of small changes in routine and responding, other times it requires replacing unhelpful sleep associations with more sustainable ones. There is no ‘one-size fits all’ approach, but many options which must be tailored to an individual child and their family, based on need, values, culture and parenting style.
I have been personally involved in conducting research into effective interventions for infants with sleep problems, and the impact of interventions in terms of stress and attachment for the infant, and mental health outcomes for parents. My research, along with the large body of literature on infant sleep, shows that parents can help their infants to develop good sleep habits, and this has positive outcomes for the individual child, and the rest of their family too!
As the mother of twins, I have also had first hand experience of how individual babies are, and of course the impact of sleep deprivation on parents! I would like to be able to say I had my daughters’ sleep under control from the beginning, but the truth is, trying to keep two babies on the same sleep-schedule is not easy and we had to work hard at it. In the early months, I was often completing sleep diaries and had to apply all my knowledge to change the plan as our girls developed and their sleep needs changed over time. But each time we made a new plan, it relieved the helpless feeling so many new parents have, and we saw improvements quickly.
